Mental Health Awareness Week

As we recently celebrated Mental Health Awareness Week, I took a moment to reflect on the importance of self-care and decided to take a break from social media.

I shared this statement:

“My action for Mental Health Awareness Week is to take a break from social media this week. I’m not good in crowded spaces  It seems an appropriate week to practice what I preach. It all starts with self and knowing the moments to step out to recharge. See you on the other side.”

This decision was about more than just a digital detox; it was a commitment to my own mental well-being.

We live in a world where we’re constantly bombarded with information, notifications, and the pressure to stay connected.

It’s crucial to recognise when this becomes overwhelming. It’s just as important to give ourselves permission to step back sometimes.

Taking a break from social media can be incredibly beneficial. It allows us to reconnect with ourselves, to be present in our physical surroundings, and to engage more deeply with the people around us.

It’s an opportunity to reduce stress, improve our mood, and gain a fresh perspective.

Here are a few tips if you’re considering your own social media break:

  1. Set Clear Boundaries: Decide how long your break will be and what platforms you’ll avoid. Having this kind of certainty about your break will help create a clear plan and make it easier to stick to your decision.
  2. Find Alternatives: Use the time you would usually spend on social media to engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Whether it’s reading a book, going for a walk, or spending time with loved ones, find what revitalises you.
  3. Reflect on Your Experience: After your break, take a moment to reflect on how it felt. Did you notice any changes in your mood or energy levels? Use this to inform your future social media habits.

Remember, self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. Taking time to recharge doesn’t mean you’re giving up—it’s about ensuring you have the strength and clarity to move forward effectively.

Take care,
